Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on the people of Edo State to support All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in the upcoming gubernatorial election, highlighting the need for a visionary leader to drive the state’s progress.
Speaking at the APC’s final campaign rally at the University of Benin, Shettima emphasized that Edo State requires a leader who can unite people across various backgrounds and deliver a functional government that provides opportunities for all. He urged the crowd to prioritize the collective desire for a better state over any divisions, stating, “What unites us most is not our differences but our collective desire for a state that meets our needs.”
The Vice President also pointed out the recent increase in government revenue allocation, assuring Edo citizens that with more funds available, the incoming administration will have the resources to implement impactful projects and programs. “This is the best time to be a Governor in Nigeria,” he noted, citing the federal government’s economic reforms.
Shettima expressed confidence in Okpebholo, calling him the right person to lead Edo into a new era of development. “Edo needs a compassionate leader who understands the pulse of his people,” he added.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed Shettima’s sentiment, highlighting the economic potential of the state, including the allocation of N212 billion for the reconstruction of the Auchi-Benin road. He stressed that aligning Edo with the party at the federal level would bring more benefits to the state.
APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, also took the stage, emphasizing that Edo has suffered under the current leadership and needs to be revitalized. Ganduje welcomed new members who defected from opposition parties, including former PDP members and other political figures.
Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, criticized the outgoing administration’s performance, particularly in infrastructure and education. He praised Vice President Shettima’s humility and leadership, while urging the people of Edo to vote for Okpebholo to reverse the state’s decline.
Senator Okpebholo, addressing the crowd, promised reforms in agriculture, education, and healthcare. He pledged to provide loans to farmers and market women, employ 5,000 teachers within his first 100 days, and declare a state of emergency on education.
The rally was attended by prominent figures including Governors from various states, as well as party members and supporters from across the country.
