Imo State witnessed a historic event as Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the 2025 Hajj airlift at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport. This was the airport’s first international operation. Altogether, 64,188 Nigerians will travel to Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage.
Speaking at the event, Shettima praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for encouraging religious harmony. He also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s full support, noting that the federal government had provided all necessary resources for a smooth and safe journey.
The Vice President urged Hajj officials to take their roles seriously. He warned them to avoid negligence and reminded pilgrims to represent Nigeria positively during their stay in Saudi Arabia. He stressed the importance of showcasing national values.
In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma celebrated the moment as a major breakthrough for Imo State. He pointed out that although the airport was built over 40 years ago, this was its first international flight. He further revealed that Christian pilgrims would also use the airport next month, showing his administration’s commitment to religious inclusion and unity.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, supported the governor’s message. He commended the efforts to promote peace and religious tolerance.
Meanwhile, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced that 315 pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa States would depart directly from the airport. This marked the first time the region had such direct international access for Hajj travel.
Additionally, other dignitaries such as Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Abubakar Sani Bello sent goodwill messages. They offered prayers for a safe and successful pilgrimage.
