FG Warns Nigerians Against Excess Salt Intake After Oyakhilome’s Claim

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a warning to Nigerians about the health risks of consuming too much salt. This advisory follows a viral video in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy encouraged his followers to increase their salt intake. He claimed that the usual warnings about salt are part of a hidden agenda to promote sodium-based drugs.

In response, the ministry released a statement to clarify the facts. It explained that while sodium is essential for muscle and nerve function, excessive intake can lead to serious health problems. These include high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

Furthermore, Alaba Balogun, the Deputy Director of Information, emphasized the importance of science-based health guidance. She cited the World Health Organization’s advice that adults should consume no more than 5 grams of salt daily—roughly one teaspoon.

Therefore, the ministry urged the public to rely on medical professionals for health advice. It also warned against following claims that lack scientific evidence.

In conclusion, while salt is necessary in small amounts, consuming too much can be harmful. Nigerians are encouraged to make informed choices for their well-being.
