FG Launches Bamboo Factory in Kogi to Curb Deforestation, Promote Green Economy

The Federal Government has begun developing a bamboo processing factory in Kogi State as part of its efforts to reduce tree felling and encourage sustainable forest use.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, announced the initiative during the seventh 2025 ministerial press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized bamboo as an eco-friendly alternative to trees, particularly for cooking fuel and other wood-based needs.

“Bamboo is a grass, but it grows like a tree and can serve the same purposes. It’s our best alternative to deforestation,” Lawal stated.

The bamboo factory is part of a broader plan to boost Nigeria’s Bamboo and Rattan Economy under the Renewed Hope Administration’s diversification agenda. Feasibility studies are underway for similar factories in Ogun, Cross River, Kaduna, Edo, Benue, Ekiti, and Taraba States.
