AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles Dominated but Frustrated by Rwanda in Goalless Draw

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Rwanda in their second match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Despite controlling much of the game, Nigeria couldn’t find the back of the net as Rwanda’s defense remained firm and disciplined throughout the match.

After their impressive 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Saturday, expectations were high for Nigeria to secure another win and maintain a perfect record in the qualifiers. Coach Augustine Eguavoen made just one change to the starting lineup from the previous game, replacing Alex Iwobi with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Victor Osimhen, who came off the bench to score against Benin, was again left on the bench.

From the opening minutes, Nigeria took charge, with Ademola Lookman creating problems for Rwanda’s defense. In the 22nd minute, Lookman thought he had scored, but his goal was ruled offside, a decision that sparked controversy among Nigerian fans. Moments earlier, Victor Boniface had hit the post, and the Super Eagles were unable to convert the rebound.

Eguavoen made changes in the second half, bringing on Osimhen and Moses Simon, who had previously combined for Nigeria’s second goal against Benin. However, Rwanda, buoyed by the presence of President Paul Kagame in the stands, remained resolute and kept Nigeria at bay.

Despite Nigeria’s continuous pressure late in the game, they were unable to break through the Rwandan defense. With this result, the Super Eagles remain at the top of their group with four points, while Rwanda sits in second place with two points.

Nigeria will be aiming to bounce back when they host Libya in their next qualifier match in October.
